Fisherfolk on Thursday told officials that demand for their catch has collapsed since the MV Barima tragedy, and called on government for compensation. The complaints were raised during a meeting at the Region Two Regional Democratic Council boardroom, where fishermen said residents have significantly cut back on seafood consumption. They attributed the decline to graphic images circulated of recovered bodies, along with the number of dead from the disaster. Authorities have confirmed 73 dead and 30 still missing. Fisherfolk said the drop in demand has hit their livelihoods hard and urged government to consider financial relief for them.
