Freedom was never given, but won by courage, Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony said as he honoured those who refused to accept that any human being was born to live in chains. He remembered Cuffy, Quamina, Jack Gladstone and Damon of Essequibo, alongside countless unnamed men and women whose labour built the foundations of modern Guyana. Dr Anthony said their legacy lives in the nation's resilience and culture, and called on Guyanese to honour their ancestors by building a Guyana where opportunity defeats poverty and unity prevails over division.
