BREAKING NEWS- HGP NIGHTLY NEWS- The criminal investigation into the MV Barima tragedy has taken a dramatic turn, with the vessel’s Captain and two other crew members being jointly charged with murder, despite the fact that the official investigation into the disaster is still in its infancy stage and the announced Commission of Inquiry has not yet commenced its work. Charged are Kevin Price, called “KP”, a 40-year-old Captain of Melanie Damishana, East Coast Demerara; Rondell Dwayne Roberts, a 42-year-old Chief Mate of Meadow Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara; and Delon Granderson, a 33-year-old Goods Superintendent of Fellowship, West Coast Demerara. The three men appeared before Chief Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, where the murder charges were formally read to them. They were not required to plead and were remanded to prison until August 3, 2026, when the matter will continue before the Charity Magistrate’s Court. The charges come at a time when authorities have repeatedly assured the nation that a comprehensive criminal investigation and an independent Commission of Inquiry would establish exactly what happened aboard the ill-fated vessel, which claimed dozens of lives. Legal minds argue that the decision to institute murder charges before the Commission of Inquiry has even begun hearing evidence is now likely to be very interesting, legally . They question, what evidence has already been gathered to satisfy the legal threshold for murder, whether investigators have completed the necessary forensic and technical analyses and how these criminal proceedings may interact with or potentially influence the findings of the Commission of Inquiry.
