Guyanese champions Slingerz FC produced a ruthless display to reach the Round of 16 of the CFU Club Shield with a commanding 4-0 thrashing of Turks and Caicos Islanders SWA Sharks. Kemar Beckford was the standout performer at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Trinidad and Tobago, effectively ending the contest before the break with a well-taken first-half double. The forward opened the scoring just ten minutes in, before doubling his side’s advantage on the stroke of half-time to leave SWA Sharks with a mountain to climb. The Turks and Caicos outfit struggled to contain Jamaal Shabazz’s side after the restart, as the GFF Elite League champions continued to dictate the tempo. Slingerz’s relentless pressure paid off once again in the closing stages when Neron Barrow extended their lead in the 75th minute. Derrel Garcia then added a final flourish six minutes from time, completing the scoring to cap a thoroughly dominant performance and send a strong message to the rest of the tournament. Guyana Football Federation President Wayne Forde was quick to praise the domestic champions, suggesting the emphatic victory is a testament to the rising standard of the country’s top flight. “Slingerz delivered a strong performance and represented Guyana with pride,” Forde said in the aftermath of the victory. “This result reflects the growing quality and competitiveness of the GFF Elite League. We congratulate the players, technical staff and management and wish them continued success in the next round.” The Guyanese side will not have long to rest on their laurels. Their regional campaign continues this Friday when they face Trinidadian outfit Prison Service FC at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, with a coveted place in the quarter-finals on the line.
