More bodies recovered from MV Barima ferry tragedy

Eight additional bodies were recovered this morning, bringing the total number of bodies recovered since the MV Barima sank off the Coast of Guyana on Saturday, to 10. In a statement this afternoon, the Government said in addition to the two bodies that were found on Sunday, eight others were recovered earlier today. “The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre deployed 13 assets from first light. By 12:35 p.m., eight bodies had been recovered during today’s operation, bringing the total number of confirmed bodies recovered since the incident to 10,” the Government said. The bodies have been transported to the Suddie Regional Hospital, where they are expected to be identified. The Government said it remains fully committed to the operation and will continue to deploy all available resources to locate and account for every person who was aboard the MV Barima at the time of the tragic incident. There is no clear indication as to the number of people who were on board the ferry at the time of the incident. While initial figures placed the number of people at 133 based on the passenger manifest, it was later realised that the number could be much higher after it was confirmed that almost half of the 67 persons rescued were not listed on the manifest.
