New landing, 24-hour power and road projects among Region One commitments

Region One is set to benefit from a series of new infrastructure projects, including expanded waterfront facilities, additional electricity generation, road upgrades and a new government service centre, President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced on Wednesday. Speaking during a Cabinet outreach in Santa Rosa, the President said the government is accelerating investments aimed at improving transportation, public services and economic opportunities across the region. Among the major announcements was confirmation that contracts have already been awarded for two new generators, which will provide residents with 24-hour electricity while increasing generating capacity for the sub-region. “Only last week we awarded the contract for two new generators that will come here to give you 24-hour electricity,” Ali announced. The President also provided an update on the Charity landing, saying construction is progressing as previously promised. However, he noted that residents have informed him the existing landing at Santa Rosa has already become too small because of increasing economic activity. “So let us discuss how we expand that landing and create more opportunities,” he said. Ali also committed to advancing the long-promised Kwebanna road, saying construction will commence and the project will be completed. He said the government intends to maximise economic opportunities along the corridor by identifying areas for housing, farming, hydroponics, poultry production and other businesses. Beyond transport, the President announced plans for a Government Service Centre that will bring several public services under one roof. The facility is expected to house postal services, digital ID services, agricultural extension offices and an ATM, reducing the need for residents to travel to Georgetown for routine government transactions. Other commitments announced include: Expansion of road maintenance and creek dredging. A technical team to repair and replace defective solar home systems. Construction of a multi-purpose community complex. Development of children’s playgrounds. Expansion of agriculture and small business opportunities through the Guyana Development Bank. A new social housing initiative targeting persons living with disabilities, single parents and the elderly. Ali said the investments form part of a broader strategy to ensure development reaches every region of Guyana while creating jobs and improving access to essential services. “We are building stronger communities, more resilient communities and a stronger Region One,” the President said
