One person died following a massive blaze late Thursday night at Lamaha Street, Newtown, Kitty, Georgetown. Sixty-five-year-old Vernal Duncan passed away in the fire. In a release, the Guyana Fire Service said firefighters from the Campbellville, Headquarters, and Eccles Fire Stations responded promptly and immediately commenced firefighting operations. Upon arrival, three homes were engulfed in flames. Vernal Duncan “Through their coordinated efforts, firefighters successfully contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading further. However, two of the homes were completely destroyed, while a third sustained partial damage,” the Fire Service said. During the emergency response, it was reported that one occupant was unaccounted for. Following the successful suppression of the fire, firefighters conducted a thorough search of the premises and tragically discovered the charred remains of the missing occupant. The News Room was reliably informed that the occupant was Mr. Duncan.
