Sylvia Grey was asleep when her son woke her after smelling smoke, moments before a massive fire destroyed a property on Lamaha Street, Newtown, Kitty, on Thursday night. The blaze, which erupted around 9:00pm, claimed the life of 65-year-old Vernon Duncan, who became trapped inside the burning home and was unable to escape. Firefighters responded quickly, but the two-storey wooden and concrete building was completely destroyed. Two neighbouring homes were also damaged.
