The Captain and other crew members who were charged with murder following the MV Barima tragedy are still receiving psychosocial support, according to Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips. Earlier Tuesday, MV Barima captain Kevin Price, called “KP”, Chief Mate Rondell Dwayne Roberts, and the Goods Superintendent, Delon Granderson, were charged with murder. However, Prime Minister Phillips acknowledged that they too are survivors of the tragedy and are receiving psychosocial support like the other survivors and bereaved families. “They are receiving it in person… You can have counselling in prison too; you have welfare officers in prison too. “They will still have access to all the necessary psychosocial care,” PM Phillips said. The MV Barima sank on July 18, 2026. So far, 76 passengers and crew members were rescued, but 73 persons have been confirmed dead. Another 30 persons are still unaccounted for. In a statement issued hours after the three men were charged, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) said the murder charges were recommended based on the investigations conducted by the Guyana Police Force. It was clarified that the independent Commission of Inquiry announced by President Dr. Irfaan Ali will not affect the prosecution of the murder charge.
