Family members, friends and residents of the close-knit Indigenous community of White Water in Region One gathered on Thursday to bid a final farewell to 13-year-old Shamera Smith and her seven-year-old nephew, Aarave Daniels, who lost their lives in the recent MV Barima tragedy. The funeral service brought together mourners from across the community to honour the lives of the two children, whose deaths like the other victims, have left relatives and residents grieving. Shamera was returning to Region One from Georgetown with her parents, her brother and Aarave after attending a family funeral when the tragedy occurred. Remembered for her kindness, determination and love for sports, Shamera had recently begun playing football for Wauna Primary School and was especially passionate about running. Her father, Grenville Smith, described her as a caring and helpful child who was always willing to assist others at school. Delivering a tribute during the funeral service, Regional Chairman Brentnol Ashley reflected on the promise both children carried. “For me, envisioning Shamera, I envision her standing on the threshold of a future-a young girl with aspirations yet to be fulfilled, memories yet to be made and a life that promised so much,” Ashley said. Speaking of Aarave, he added “Aarave, with the innocence and wonder that only a seven-year-old can possess, brought joy through every smile, every laugh and every embrace. Though their years among us were few, the love they shared and the happiness they brought will remain with us forever.” Shamera’s eulogy painted the picture of a young girl whose warmth touched everyone she encountered. Family members recalled that she had a unique way of making people feel welcomed, loved and appreciated, leaving lasting memories with those fortunate enough to know her. Her educational journey reflected her determination and eagerness to learn. She embraced every opportunity to grow, lead and participate in extracurricular activities, particularly sports. “She loved competition, teamwork and the thrill of representing her school and community. She always gave her all,” the eulogy stated. Those closest to Shamera also remembered her for making every person feel valued in their own special way, a quality that endeared her to classmates, teachers, relatives and friends alike. As prayers were offered and final tributes paid, mourners reflected not only on the heartbreaking loss of two young lives but also on the lasting impact Shamera and Aarave made on their family and community despite their tender ages.
