Zalema Ally, 55, is counting her blessings after narrowly escaping a fire that destroyed the upper flat of the two-storey house at Lot 1 Edinburgh Village, East Bank Berbice, this morning. She said she was awakened by unusual noises before discovering thick smoke filling the house. "I was in bed when I started hearing noises. Before I could get out of bed, I saw smoke. I rushed to the kitchen to check if anything was happening upstairs, but it wasn't. The smoke was coming from downstairs," she said. She quickly got dressed and fled as the smoke intensified.
