Pedestrian dies after struck by reversing truck

A 54-year-old pedestrian died on Wednesday afternoon after he was struck by a reversing truck along the Haslington Railway Embankment Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD). Dead is Shawn Gittens, a resident of Golden Grove, ECD. According to Police Headquarters, the accident occurred at approximately 17:20hrs and involved a truck owned by China Railway Construction, driven by a 36-year-old Chinese national of Lusignan, ECD. Preliminary investigations indicate that the truck was engaged in paving works on the southern carriageway and was reversing when Gittens reportedly walked behind the vehicle and was struck. Emergency Medical Technicians responded to the scene, where Gittens was pronounced dead. His body was later transported to the Memorial Gardens Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination. Police said a Notice of Intended Prosecution has been served on the driver, who remains in custody as investigations into the accident continue.
