Mother, teenage daughter who perished in MV Barima tragedy laid to rest

A wave of grief swept through family and friends in Mabaruma, Region One (Barima- Waini) as Gwenette Nunes and her 15-year-old daughter, Ulanda Marques were laid to rest following the horrific MV Barima tragedy. The funeral service, marked by tears, prayers, and heartfelt tributes, brought together members of the community who gathered to pay their final respects to two lives tragically cut short. Loved ones struggled to come to terms with the devastating loss, remembering the mother as a caring, devoted parent and her daughter as an intelligent child whose future was filled with promise. The atmosphere was filled with sorrow as mourners embraced one another, offering comfort and support while honoring their memories. Church members encouraged those in attendance to hold onto faith during this difficult time, reminding grieving relatives that love and cherished memories endure even in the face of unimaginable loss. As their caskets were carried to their final resting place, mourners, who flocked to get a final glimpse of them were overcome with emotions. Ulanda along with her siblings were traveling home to spend the August holiday with her family in Mabaruma. She attended the Kuru Kuru Secondary School on the Linden Highway. Her siblings Odessa, Analisa, Rehsanna, and Justin were with her. So far, the bodies of Odessa, Analisa, and Justin have been recovered, while Rehsanna remains unaccounted for.
