Protest unfolds outside Jagdeo-led outreach in Linden

A government outreach led by Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo in Linden on Tuesday continued largely uninterrupted despite a protest staged outside the venue by opposition leaders and supporters. The outreach was organised to allow Region Ten residents to raise concerns directly with government officials and access services provided by several ministries, government departments and agencies. Throughout the morning, residents met with officials at booths established to address matters ranging from housing and social assistance to public infrastructure and other government services. Outside the venue, a contrasting scene unfolded as Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed joined protesters, including People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) Leader Aubrey Norton , regional officials and supporters. Demonstrators chanted, waved placards and called for action on several issues, including the appointment of a Chairman for the Region Ten Regional Democratic Council and accountability following the MV Barima tragedy. The group later assembled within the Watooka compound, where they remained for the duration of the morning. The ministry and agency booths established to receive concerns from residents were not utilised by the protesters. The opposition has been calling for the installation of the WIN representative as Regional Chairman, while protesters also used the opportunity to demand accountability in the aftermath of the MV Barima tragedy, which claimed dozens of lives.
