Police destroy $2.3M worth of ganja in Upper Berbice River

A joint police eradication exercise in the Upper Berbice River area resulted in the destruction of more than 10,000 cannabis plants, thousands of seedlings, and two camps used in the cultivation of narcotics. Police estimate the street value of the narcotics destroyed at $2.3 million. The operation was conducted between 05:00 hrs and 20:50 hrs on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at Friendship Sandhill Village and Wiruni Savannah. At Friendship Sandhill Village, police ranks uncovered a two-acre cultivation site containing approximately 10,000 cannabis plants ranging from two to four feet in height. Officers also discovered a makeshift camp and a nursery with approximately 4,140 cannabis seedlings. Meanwhile, at Wiruni Savannah, ranks located a drying camp measuring about 40 feet by 15 feet, where a quantity of suspected dried cannabis leaves was found. No arrests were made during the operation. Investigations into the cultivation and ownership of the illegal crops are ongoing.
