The cluster of makeshift roadside shacks at the head of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo is set to be replaced by a modern market as part of plans to transform the community into one of Guyana’s model villages. The new market is expected to become the focal point of a wider transformation of the East Bank Essequibo community, with plans also including a major upgrade of the main access road and improvements to public infrastructure aimed at enhancing the appearance and quality of life in the village. Tuschen Main Road (current state) A site for the market has already been identified and will replace the current informal structures with a purpose-built facility that will better serve vendors, shoppers and the growing community. The transformation also includes a complete upgrade of Tuschen’s main access road. The existing 16-foot-wide asphalt road with earthen shoulders and drains is planned to be widened to 26 feet, with crusher-run shoulders, reinforced concrete drains fitted with covers, and a bus stop complete with a shelter. The plans also include a dedicated lot to address the issue of heavy machinery occupying sections of the road shoulders, helping to improve traffic flow and the overall appearance of the community. Proposed look after upgrades Tuschen is home to 3,946 residents and covers 757 acres. The plans form part of the Government’s wider Model Village Initiative, which aims to establish a new standard for villages across Guyana by improving roads, public spaces, recreational facilities and community infrastructure before expanding the programme to communities nationwide.
