Press Release from the Guyana Football Federation The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) continues to strengthen its youth development pathway through the FIFA Talent Development Scheme (TDS), a long-term programme designed to identify, develop, and prepare the country’s most promising young footballers for regional and international competition. Launched in April 2026, the FIFA Talent Development Scheme forms part of FIFA’s global strategy to ensure that every talented player has access to a structured development pathway. Through technical guidance, funding, resources, and ongoing monitoring, the programme supports member associations in building sustainable systems that strengthen the competitiveness of their national teams. In Guyana, the TDS programme brings together the nation’s top boys and girls for a year-round training under the supervision of the GFF’s National Coaches Pool. Players participate in six to eight hours of weekly training, focusing on technical ability, tactical awareness, physical conditioning, and personal development in a professional, high-performance environment. The programme currently comprises a core group of approximately 24 players, with a wider training pool of around 30. While most participants are drawn from the coastal regions, the programme also creates regular opportunities for talented players from the hinterland and other parts of the country to be identified and integrated into the national pathway. Supporting the programme is the GFF’s National Coaches Pool, made up of eight youth coaches who deliver a consistent player development curriculum. Their work is complemented by the GFF Youth Ensemble Programme, which has expanded talent identification across Guyana and strengthened the scouting network, ensuring that promising players from every regional association can enter the academy. The progress of the Talent Development Scheme will be on display next month when the programme’s beneficiaries represent Guyana at the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) U14 Challenge Series in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The competition serves as the first major international test for players who have been training within TDS structure since its launch, providing an opportunity to translate months of structured preparation into competitive performances against regional opposition. Guyana will compete in Tier II, Group C, opening its campaign against Montserrat on Sunday, August 16, before facing Anguilla on Monday, August 17, and The Bahamas on Wednesday, August 19. Participation in the CFU U14 Challenge Series represents an important milestone in the Federation’s long-term player development strategy. Beyond the results on the field, the tournament will allow players to gain valuable international experience while giving coaches an opportunity to assess their progress in a competitive environment. The lessons learned will feed directly back into the Talent Development Scheme, ensuring the programme continues to produce technically sound, tactically aware, and internationally competitive footballers. As the GFF continues to invest in structured youth development through the FIFA Talent Development Scheme and the Youth Ensemble Programme, it is laying the foundation for a sustainable national talent pathway, one that will prepare the next generation of Golden Jaguars to compete with confidence on both the regional and international stage.
