For days, 12-year-old Viviana Sadruddin couldn’t control her excitement over going on a trip to Port Kaituma with her cousins. Her bags were all packed and ready four days before she was scheduled to leave on the MV Barima on Saturday, July 18. What was supposed to be an exciting trip turned into tragedy for the family when the MV Barima sank late Saturday night, before reaching Port Kaituma. “She was 12, about to be 13. She was a real nice child, a real loving daughter. She was so kind, so easy, and so happy fuh go [on the trip to Port Kaituma],” Viviana’s mother, Amanda Ramit, said. She also recalls her daughter’s aspirations. Young Viviana wanted to be a hairdresser but she also wanted to own her own business — dreams that will now go unrealised. Now, Amanda isn’t only reeling from the loss of her daughter, but of other relatives too. Amanda Ramitt There were eight cousins making the trip. Four were rescued, but Viviana, along with her cousins — eight-year-old Akeela Rodrigues and seven-year-old Rubina Hernandez — died. Two-year-old Vince Wong is still missing.
