Leonora in line for major makeover under Model Villages initiative

Residents of Leonora on the West Coast of Demerara could see wider roads, improved drainage, upgraded street lighting, new parks and recreational spaces, CCTV cameras, additional fire hydrants and bus sheds as part of the government’s Model Villages initiative. The initiative outlines a broad vision to modernise the historic village while preserving its heritage and strengthening public infrastructure. The initiative aims to improve the appearance, functionality and sustainability of Leonora through road and drainage upgrades, landscaping, new green spaces and better utility infrastructure. Leonora is recognised as one of Region Three’s most historic communities, with roots dating back to the Plantation Leonora sugar estate of the late 1700s. The village was reported named after the two children (Leo and Nora) of the plantation’s owners. The village is a community known for its sugar estate history, labour heritage, cultural diversity and strong community ties. Among the major proposals are the installation of 15 bus sheds. There are currently no designated waiting areas despite the concentration of schools, government offices, health facilities and businesses. The plan also calls for expanding fire protection by increasing the number of fire hydrants from six existing units to 19 through the installation of 13 additional hydrants. Security infrastructure is also set to improve with more surveillance cameras to complement the four already in operation. Roadworks would cover several sections of the community, including North Leonora, Seaspray, Jib, Seafield, Parafield, Pasture, Groenveldt and newer housing developments. Across these areas, the proposals include wider roads, reinforced concrete drains, hard-covered drains that double as sidewalks, crusher-run shoulders, upgraded street lighting and decorative palm trees to improve the streetscape. Some recently completed roads would receive complementary drainage and shoulder works rather than complete reconstruction. The public road through Leonora is also earmarked for major drainage improvements, with larger reinforced concrete drains on both sides and concrete walkways to better serve the area’s high concentration of public and private facilities. Several recreational and community spaces are also proposed. Plans for Parafield include a pedestrian walkway, gazebos and benches while retaining existing trees. An old estate compound is envisioned as a multi-purpose sports complex featuring a basketball court, volleyball court, cricket field, shaded seating areas and floodlights. Upgrades are also planned for Kowsilla Park, including additional landscaping, repaired gazebos and decorative fencing, while a landscaped garden and welcome sign are proposed at Groenveldt. An assessment also identified a number of issues that planners say will need to be addressed before work begins. These include derelict vehicles, construction materials and commercial activities occupying road reserves. These encumbrances would have to be removed to allow the full use of public reserves during implementation.
