Every fatal crash leaves behind grieving families, and while Guyana has recorded fewer deadly accidents in 2026 than the same period last year, dozens of lives have already been lost on the country’s roadways so far this year. Traffic Chief Mahendra Singh told the News Room that 68 fatal accidents have claimed 74 lives up to August 4,2026. For the corresponding period last year, there were 70 fatal accidents. Singh noted that although the number of fatal crashes declined slightly, dangerous driving behaviours continue to fuel the tragedies. Traffic Chief, Mahendra Singh Speeding, crossing the path of moving vehicles, inattentiveness and driving under the influence remain the leading causes of fatal accidents. Beyond the fatal crashes, the overall number of road accidents has also fallen. Up to August 4, Singh said the Traffic Department recorded 701 accidents, down from 908 during the same period last year—a 23 per cent reduction. He explained that not every collision resulted in serious injuries, noting that nearly 82 per cent of the crashes recorded this year did not require medical attention and/or an emergency response. “Most of the accidents, if not all, were accidents that did not demand medical attention and/or response by the emergency services, almost 82 per cent,” he said. According to Singh, the Traffic Department is relying on crash data to determine where officers should be deployed and where road safety campaigns are most needed. Based on data, he said, police continue to roll out awareness programmes and identify areas where additional road markings, signs and traffic lights can help reduce crashes and save lives.
