Albion Cricket Club targeting over 80 youngsters for 24th annual academy

The 24th edition of the Albion Community Centre Cricket Club’s Cricket Academy will commence on Monday, August 3 at the Albion Community Centre. More than 80 young cricketers, between the ages of eight and 18 are expected to participate in the six-day academy, which is once again sponsored by Connecticut, USA-based businessman Nizul Hussain of Northeast Connecticut Renovation and Retailers Property Management. Hussain, a hard-hitting opening batsman who represented the Albion Community Centre Cricket Club at every level before migrating to the United States, is sponsoring the academy for the fifth consecutive year at a cost of more than G$360,000. Speaking via telephone from the United States during a simple launching ceremony recently held at the Albion Community Centre’s Main Hall, Hussain expressed his pleasure at continuing to support the club that played a significant role in his development. “I am delighted to once again have the opportunity to support my club. I am a product of the Albion Cricket Academy and I fully understand the benefits that this academy provides to young cricketers. It is important that we continue to invest in our youth and help them develop both on and off the field,” Hussain said. President of the Albion Community Centre Cricket Club, Vemen Walter, thanked Hussain for his unwavering commitment to the club and its youth development programme. “I want to thank Mr. Hussain for his continued support of Albion cricket. Like many former Albion cricketers, he has never forgotten his roots and for that he deserves tremendous praise. This academy has become a fixture on the club’s cricket development calendar and has played a significant role in nurturing many of our young players over the years. I am confident that the 2026 edition will continue that proud tradition,” Walter stated. Sessions will be held daily from 08:30h to 15:00h. The morning sessions will feature lectures and interactive discussions on topics such as the importance of education, discipline, public speaking, substance abuse, health and safety, motivation, the laws of cricket, among others. Afternoon sessions will focus on developing the cricketing skills of participants through practical coaching. The academy’s coaching staff will be led by former West Indies opening batsman Sewnarine Chattergoon and will include fellow former West Indies cricketer Devendra Bishoo, former Guyana wicketkeeper/batsman Anthony Bramble and former Berbice Under-19 all-rounder Zameer Khan. Several prominent national coaches are also expected to conduct specialised coaching sessions.
