A 54-year-old resident of Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara, died on Wednesday after being struck by a reversing motor lorry engaged in road paving works along the Haslington Railway Embankment Road. Shawn Gittens was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation after Emergency Medical Technicians responded to the accident, which occurred at about 5:20pm on July 29 on the southern carriageway. Police said preliminary investigations indicate Gittens walked behind the lorry, owned by China Railway Construction, as it was reversing during the paving works, and was struck. The lorry's driver, a 36-year-old Chinese national of Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, was served with a Notice of Intended Prosecution and remains in police custody assisting with the investigation. Gittens' body was taken to the Memorial Gardens Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination. Photo credit: Tyrese Charles
