HGP NIGHTLY NEWS- The Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) has seized more than 55 kilograms of cocaine following an operation along the Providence Public Road, East Bank Demerara, resulting in the arrest of two foreign nationals. According to CANU, officers intercepted a motor vehicle on Friday, July 24, 2026 and a search uncovered 50 brick-like parcels of cocaine weighing a total of 55.296 kilograms. The suspects have been identified as Venezuelan national Gerardo Martinez and Colombian national Revelino Achicue Ascue. Both men were charged and appeared before Magistrate Bess at the Diamond Magistrates’ Court. Ascue pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment along with a fine of $82.944 million, while Martinez pleaded not guilty and was remanded to prison pending further proceedings. CANU also disclosed that several other foreign and Guyanese nationals remain in custody as investigations continue into the drug trafficking operation.
