Tree-lined streets, parks and modern walkways planned for La Parfaite Harmonie under Model Villages initiative

Tree-lined streets, landscaped parks, modern sidewalks and illuminated roads are planned for La Parfaite Harmonie under ambitious plans to transform the West Bank Demerara community into one of Guyana’s model villages. Concept designs prepared under the Government’s Model Villages initiative and showcased Monday to villagers by President Dr Irfaan Ali, show a dramatic makeover for the community, with Independence Junction redesigned into an organised gateway, neighbourhood green spaces converted into recreational parks, and the area surrounding the nursery school upgraded with safer pedestrian facilities and a dedicated drop-off lane. The proposals are part of a wider programme championed by President Ali to establish a new benchmark for villages across Guyana by improving public spaces, infrastructure and community amenities. For La Parfaite Harmonie, the plans target almost every aspect of village life. Proposed enhancement to the main access road. More than three kilometres of roads would be rehabilitated, while over 28 kilometres of road shoulders would be upgraded with concrete sidewalks to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility. More than 24 kilometres of drains would also be rehabilitated through desilting and the construction of reinforced concrete-lined drains to improve drainage and reduce flooding. The initiative will see the construction of 45 culverts, the installation of 150 fire hydrants and the planting of over 100 trees throughout the community, creating shaded streets while strengthening emergency preparedness. Street lighting would be expanded into areas that are currently poorly lit, with defective lamps replaced and sections of the electricity network modified where necessary. Utility companies would also coordinate repairs to electricity poles and water infrastructure before construction begins. Residents who rely on public transportation are also expected to benefit from improved access, with six bus stop access points proposed, including four along the eastern road corridor. Public facilities are another major focus of the plan. The La Parfaite Harmonie Health Centre would receive new sidewalks, covered concrete drains, street lighting and fire hydrants, while the nursery school would gain similar improvements together with a dedicated drop-off lane to make arrivals and departures safer for children and parents. The plans also envision extensive upgrades to community green spaces, turning existing open areas into landscaped recreational parks with improved walkways, seating and shade, while village entrances would be marked by new welcome signs and enhanced landscaping. Before construction begins, authorities plan to clear roadside debris, refuse, overgrown vegetation and other encumbrances identified as obstructing roads and drainage channels, particularly around Independence Junction. Utility conflicts involving electricity and water infrastructure would also be resolved before civil work commences. La Parfaite Harmonie covers about 245 acres and includes 61 roads, 937 households, one school, one health centre, two places of worship, 29 businesses and four green spaces. The implementation programme proposes a phased approach beginning with drainage and utility works before moving to road rehabilitation, pedestrian infrastructure and community greening.
