Commonwealth Games 2026: Team Guyana to honour MV Barima victims at opening ceremony

Team Guyana will pay a solemn tribute to the victims of the MV Barima boat tragedy during the opening ceremony of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Following formal approval from the Commonwealth Games organising committee, the nation’s flag—the Golden Arrowhead—will be flown at half-mast during the flag-raising ceremony to honour those who lost their lives in the recent tragedy. In a visible expression of national mourning, Guyanese athletes and officials will wear black armbands and black attire as they enter the stadium. The delegation has chosen to temper the traditionally vibrant and celebratory nature of the opening ceremony to stand in solidarity with the bereaved families and communities back home. While the athletes remain committed to representing their country in competition, team officials emphasised the importance of first pausing to remember the lives tragically cut short. The Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) extended its sincere gratitude to both the Commonwealth Games Federation and the Glasgow 2026 organisers for their compassion and support in accommodating the tributes. As the athletes step onto the international stage, officials noted they will do so with heavy hearts, dedicating their presence at the Games to the memory of the victims while keeping the affected families in their thoughts and prayers.
