GAPLF pays tribute to Guyanese sporting pioneer Dr Ian McDonald

The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF) has joined the nation in mourning the loss of Dr Ian McDonald, a towering figure in Caribbean sport and literature, who has passed away in Canada . The GAPLF president, executive committee, and its members paid their respects to the Trinidad and Tobago-born polymath, whose remarkable athletic and administrative contributions spanned tennis, squash, and cricket . Dr McDonald’s exploits on the tennis court remain a significant chapter in regional history . He graced the iconic grass courts of Wimbledon in 1952, 1953, 1954, and 1959, and proudly captained the West Indies in the Davis Cup during the late 1950s . His domestic dominance was highlighted in 1957 when he led Guyana to Brandon Trophy glory, while simultaneously capturing both the singles and doubles championships . That stellar year culminated in him being jointly crowned Guyana’s Sportsman of the Year alongside athlete and trade unionist George DePeana . Dr McDonald’s dedication to tennis extended well beyond his playing days, though he continued to compete competitively until 1985 . He also served the sport in an administrative capacity as the Secretary of the British Lawn Tennis Association throughout the 1960s and 1970s . Beyond the tennis court, he was a pioneering force for squash in Guyana . Alongside Edgar Readwin, Dr McDonald introduced the sport at the Georgetown Club in the late 1960s and went on to represent the Golden Arrowhead in the ensuing decade . A lifelong cricket aficionado and respected writer, he also utilised his expertise at the highest level of regional administration . In 2008, he served on the Committee on the Governance of West Indies Cricket, working alongside PJ Patterson and Alister McIntyre . The GAPLF noted that Dr McDonald’s rich sporting legacy continues to flourish locally through his family . His son, Jamie McDonald, is a familiar face in the sports community as the owner and manager of Fitness Express . Furthermore, his granddaughter, national squash player Zoey McDonald, recently added to the family’s trophy cabinet by securing a silver medal at the Caribbean Area Squash Association Junior Championships in the British Virgin Islands . In their concluding remarks, the Federation extended their deepest sympathies, wishing eternal rest for a man they described as a distinguished son of the soil and a sportsman extraordinaire.
