Yarrowkabra resident, 21, dies in accident

Christopher Thomas, a 21-year-old resident of Yarrowkabra Village on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, died on Wednesday night following an accident on the Coverden Public Road, East Bank Demerara. According to a Police release, the accident occurred around 21:10 hrs. The accident involved motor van #PAG 8745, driven by a 39-year-old Chinese national of Kuru Kururu Village, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, and motorcycle #CR 8010, which Christopher Thomas was riding. A 24-year-old man of Grand Sand Road, Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara, was the pillion rider. Police said initial enquiries revealed that the motor van was proceeding north along the western driving lane of Coverden Public Road. Upon approaching the entrance to a worksite compound, the motor van allegedly turned right into the compound without stopping. In the process, the vehicle collided with the motorcycle, which was proceeding south along the eastern driving lane of the road, allegedly at a fast rate. As a result of the collision, the motorcyclist and pillion rider were flung onto the roadway and sustained injuries about their bodies. They were transported to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where Christopher Thomas was pronounced dead while receiving medical treatment by a doctor on duty. The pillion rider remains a patient at the Diamond Regional Hospital receiving medical treatment. CCTV cameras were seen in the area and will be reviewed. A breathalyser test conducted on the driver of the motor van returned a reading of 0.07 micrograms, which is below the prescribed legal limit. The driver of the motor van is presently in police custody assisting with investigations. Investigations are ongoing.
