A 21-year-old motorcyclist from Yarrowkabra on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway lost his life tragically last evening along the Coverden Public Road after he was hit down by a motor van that was being driven by a Chinese national, according to the Police. Police have identified the dead youth as Christopher Thomas. A 24-year-old who was the pillion rider on his motorcycle was injured in the accident and remains hospitalised. The Police report stated that the motor van being driven by the Chinese national was proceeding north along the western driving lane of the Coverden Public Road and upon approaching the entrance to a worksite compound, the driver turned right into the compound without stopping. In the process, slammed into the motorcycle, which was proceeding along the roadway. The young motorcyclist and his pillion rider were flung onto the roadway and sustained injuries about their bodies. Both men were transported to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where Christopher Thomas was pronounced dead while receiving medical treatment by a doctor on duty. The pillion rider remains a patient at the Diamond Regional Hospital. The Police said CCTV cameras were seen in the area and the footage from those cameras will be reviewed as part of the investigations. A breathalyser test conducted on the driver of the motor van returned a reading of 0.07 micrograms, which is below the prescribed legal limit. The driver of the motor van was taken into Police custody.
